The X-Wing Graveyard: Starfighter Wrecks in a Junkyard Far, Far Away

In a gloomy junkyard far, far away, a lonely R2 unit gazes at the decaying hulks of wrecked X-Wing fighters, which presumably have been damaged beyond repair in combat or simply come to the end of their useful lives. This striking piece of work comes from concept artist Emmanuel Shiu, whose credits also include Star Trek and Game of Thrones. The X-Wing graveyard was featured in a short blog post on io9, after which it was shared more than 27,000 times and spawned a number of theories as to its purpose and backstory. Comments ranged from the tongue-in-cheek (R2 left his wallet in the X-Wing) to the more interesting, which suggested that the starfighter boneyard was part of the Jedi Academy, where young Jedi Knights in training could hone their mastery over the Force by lifting decommissioned X-Wings (perhaps out of simulated Dagobah swamps).
